
Why Your Coop Heater Actually Dies (And How We Fixed It)
If you’ve ever used a waterproof infrared heater in a chicken coop, you know the drill. You buy a unit, it works great for a while, and then—out of nowhere—it just quits. Most people think the heating element burned out. But here’s the real secret: it’s almost never the bulb. It’s the lead-wire junction.
The “Crack” Problem
Infrared lamps get incredibly hot. To keep them waterproof, you have to seal the spot where the electrical wire meets the quartz tube. Cheap heaters use basic silicone or some low-grade glue. It looks fine on the shelf, but once it goes through a few hundred hours of heating up and cooling down, that glue dries out. It gets brittle. It cracks. And that’s when the trouble starts. Moisture from the coop seeps into those tiny cracks, causes some oxidation, and—boom. You’ve got a short circuit.
How We Do It Differently
We got tired of seeing heaters fail, so we changed the process. First, we mechanically crimp the wire to the tungsten filament so it’s physically locked in. Then, we use a high-alumina ceramic seal or a heavy-duty epoxy. The key here is that the seal expands and contracts at the same rate as the quartz tube. If those two materials don’t move together, the seal just pops right off. By matching them up, the bond stays tight even when the lamp is glowing red hot. No gaps. No leaks. No surprises.
One Quick Tip for Setup
There is a trade-off, though. Because our seals are so much tougher, the wire is a bit more rigid near the tube. Don’t bend the wires sharplyright where they meet the glass. If you force a tight bend, you might crack the seal you’re trying to protect. Just make sure your wiring harness has a bit of slack. Give it some breathing room. As long as you aren’t pulling on the leads, you’ve got a heater that can handle the dampest, toughest environments without burning out.
