
A Better Way to Handle IR Curing
When you’re drying wafers or curing photoresist, you don’t want to waste time heating up a giant metal box. That’s why we use UHP (Ultra High Purity) heater lamps. Think of it like the difference between waiting for a whole oven to preheat versus using a toaster. Instead of warming the air, these lamps shoot shortwave infrared radiation straight into the substrate. It’s direct. It’s fast. We use high-density tungsten filaments wrapped in high-purity quartz to make this happen. The IR waves hit the semiconductor material and turn into heat instantly. You aren’t wasting energy warming up the walls of your machine—the heat goes exactly where it needs to go. It’s just a smarter way to save power. Then there’s the “green” side of things. If you’re working with lead-free soldering or eco-friendly curing, your temperature window is tiny. Too hot? You fry the substrate. Too cold? The bond just doesn’t hold. The beauty of UHP lamps is that they react in milliseconds. You can flick the heat on and off almost instantly. Because the control is so tight, you can ditch the nasty chemical solvents and hazardous accelerants that used to be the norm. No VOCs, no lead-based flux. Just clean, radiant heat. Now, there is a catch. These lamps pack a massive amount of heat into a tiny space. That puts a lot of pressure on your power supply and means you have to be serious about your cooling. If your fans or heat sinks aren’t up to the task, the electronics around the lamp will literally bake. You’ve got to find that sweet spot between the lamp’s output and how fast your system can shed that heat, or you’ll be replacing burnt-out parts way too often. Since these live in cleanrooms, we treat the quartz to stop outgassing. That way, nothing drifts off the lamp and lands on your wafer during the cycle. Simple, clean, and it just works.
